When and how did you get your start in marketing?
Most of my career has been in operations, management, and customer service. When the communication analyst role opened up, I had the experience to make an impact on our customers’ experiences and manage our systems. In 2023, I decided to further expand my knowledge and career by stepping into the role, which allowed me to collaborate with our marketing team and gain deeper insights into the world of marketing.
What is a common misconception about your role?
That customer communications are easy and just a simple email or SMS. In reality, every word, sentiment, format, image, and link is carefully considered, along with ensuring data is passed correctly and that UTMs and tracking are in place. There’s also extensive testing and previewing to ensure emails render properly across different devices and platforms. A lot of work and collaboration across teams goes into each email thoughtfully.
What tips, tricks, or pieces of advice would give a new Iterable user?
Invest in an upgraded support plan. Our support agent has been incredibly helpful in answering our questions, addressing concerns, and resolving issues. Previously, we spent a lot of time navigating Iterable’s knowledge base, but having a dedicated support agent has saved us significant time and provided insights beyond what’s available in the KB. The drag-and-drop feature makes email creation super easy and straightforward. The segmentation tool is always useful for pulling users based on specific data and creating user lists. What do you think will be the next big thing in the marketing industry (AI, automation, new channels?)
I believe it’s already happening with AI, particularly in how emails are categorized and rendered as easy-to-read, quick snippets. This will continue to evolve, becoming more widely used for convenience and enabling customers to sift through their emails quickly and efficiently.
How do you stay up–to–date with the latest trends and developments in marketing?
I do online research and sign up for a lot of companies’ emails to see what they are doing, looking for trends in marketing. I also sign up for free webinars, online courses, or any learning opportunities that provide insights and opportunities to collaborate with other marketing experts.

For example, if a customer reserves a unit after office hours, they receive a message with instructions on how to access their storage unit outside of business hours. Alternatively, if their rental requires in-person verification, they receive a customized message with details on what documents to bring and when to visit the facility. Instead of sending a single, generic message, Extra Space Storage dynamically adapts its communications to fit each unique scenario, leveraging relevant data points for precision.
Results
The rental confirmation campaign is the most complex in terms of customization, utilizing the highest number of split tiles and personalized messages.
